The 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby comes your way the first Saturday in May capping the two week long Kentucky Derby Festival.
The race is a Grade 1 stakes for three-year-old thoroughbreds at a distance of one and a quarter miles (2 km) at Churchill Downs. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds and fillies 121 pounds, and this year’s purse will be $2,000,000 .The run for the roses as it is also known started back in 1875 and moved to its permanent home at Churchill Downs in 1937.
Horse racing fans from all over world make their way to Louisville Kentucky in hopes of seeing their favorite three year old make a run at history and of course win the first leg of the Triple Crown.
In 2015 the attendance record was broken once when 170,513 race fans saw American Pharaoh win what would be the first leg of his Triple Crown victory, the first one since 1978.
